Amerks And Knighthawks Raise Over $54,000 For CF Of Rochester

March 10, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL) - Rochester Americans News Release

(Rochester, March 10)... The Rochester Americans and Rochester Knighthawks celebrated the historic 20th Anniversary of the team's Celebrity Waiter Dinner & Auction last night with a record-breaking $54,000 being raised. The proceeds from the event will go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Rochester and the Knighthawks/Amerks Charitable Foundation, Inc.

"We were thrilled to learn that the event raised a record amount of money this year," said Amerks and Knighthawks President Lewis Staats. "We are always excited to assist in worthwhile causes like the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation."

The biggest single donation of the night was courtesy of Curt Styres and Arrow Express Sports, who matched the total money raised through the Bid for a Cure auction, and the live and silent auctions that took place during the event. The only catch was that the 200 people had to do a conga line dance, which they gladly did for CF to receive the $18,000 from Arrow Express Sports.

The Celebrity Waiter Dinner and Auction has now raised over $754,000 in the past 20 years to help fund on-going, groundbreaking medical research aimed at curing and controlling cystic fibrosis. This year marked the second straight season that the dinner was held at the downtown Blue Cross Arena and included both the Amerks and Knighthawks players. Kyle Schuhart again served as the CF Ambassador of Hope.

"The evening was remarkable. This community, and the foundation, is fortunate to have partners like the Amerks and Knighthawks. They do so much for everyone with cystic fibrosis and their families," said Susanne Perrone, the CF Foundation's Executive Director.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation presented two Partners of Hope awards prior to the dinner. The first award was accepted by the president of Toshiba Business Solutions Steven Sauer. The Amerks and Knighthawks received the second award for two decades of service. The award was accepted by Owner and CEO Curt Styres, President Lewis Staats and the entire staff.

"We are honored to be recognized by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for a partnership that has spanned 20 years. The success of the dinner is due in large part to the members of our staff, the CF staff and the volunteers who have made this a signature charitable event for the past two decades," said Staats.

The fun-filled event featured players trading in their jerseys for tuxedoes and serving guests their food and drinks for tips. The tipping did not stop after dinner, as players perform antics and tricks with their guests and fellow players for more money. Knighthawks forward Chris Driscoll and Amerks defenseman John de Gray even dressed up like Zweigle's hot dogs and entertained the crowd. Patrons also bid on sports memorabilia from the National Hockey League, American Hockey League, National Lacrosse League and the National Football League. The silent auction also included stuffed animals made by the Amerks and Knighthawks players at the Eastview Mall Build-A-Bear Workshop©, sponsored by J. T. Genier Security Services.
