UNCASVILLE, Conn. (March 8, 2010) - The Connecticut Sun Foundation announced today that for the fourth straight year it will be offering one $10,000 Bright Horizons Scholarship to a worthy candidate.

To be eligible for a Bright Horizons Scholarship, applicants must be currently enrolled Connecticut high school seniors with an anticipated graduation date of spring 2010 who are eligible to attend an accredited college or university within the state. Additionally, they must be legal U.S. residents who can demonstrate financial need.

"We are really proud of all the ways this organization has given back to local communities over the years," Connecticut Sun Vice President and General Manager Chris Sienko said. "But I'm not sure there is anything we do that has more of an impact than the Bright Horizons Scholarship. Helping one deserving student attend college each year is an investment in the future, and it's rewarding to know we can help contribute in such a meaningful way."

Past Bright Horizons Scholarship recipients include Rebecca Wilcox, Audrey Sperry and Christina Mezes.

"It was a great honor to receive the scholarship," said Sperry, the 2008 Bright Horizons Scholarship recipient, who is majoring in psychology at Connecticut College with plans to pursue a career in medicine. "It helped a great deal with my family and me being able to come to Connecticut College. It definitely made it possible."

All BHS candidates will provide information detailing leadership abilities through community service and extracurricular activities, and two letters of recommendation referencing academic and community achievements. They will also be asked to submit a 500-word essay describing the greatest challenge in their community, and how they hope to make a positive change.

All completed applications must be received in the Connecticut Sun Foundation offices by June 1, 2010. Finalists for the Bright Horizons Scholarship will be interviewed by the selection committee in July.

The Bright Horizons Scholarship is the cornerstone initiative of the Connecticut Sun Foundation, which is dedicated to improving the lives of Connecticut's youth by supporting athletic and educational endeavors.
