Rebernik Hattie Helps Ice Flyers Top Columbus 4-1

Chris Rebernik scored a Hat Trick in the Ice Flyers? 4-1 victory over the Cottonmouths Tuesday night in Pensacola. With the win the Ice Flyers moved into sole possession of fourth place in the SPHL standings. Goalie Jamie Gilbert was magnificent in the crease, saving 30 of 31 Columbus shots. He was tested from the onset.

Despite multiple chances for both teams, the game remained scoreless halfway through the first period. That all changed at 10:38 when Chris Rebernik split two defenders just to the right of the slot. He then cut across the front of the crease and deked Chad Rycroft before going top shelf for the only goal of the first period. Pensacola was outshooting Columbus 17-8 when the horn sounded to end the first frame.

Another breakaway provided the second goal of the game, this time a Cottonmouth strike. Jesse Cole received a beautiful pass from Kyle Lundale to setup a solo opportunity. Cole didn?t miss and the game was tied 5:43 into the second period.

The Ice Flyers had a man advantage to start the third period. They took full advantage of the situation and with some beautiful passing took a 2-1 lead just 13 seconds into the third frame. Joey Hughes slid the puck to Matt Whitehead who deferred to Chris Rebernik right in front of the cage. Rebernik netted his second goal of the night and the Ice Flyers had the lead. Rebernik himself would be responsible for widening the Pensacola advantage.

Hats flew onto the ice when Chris Rebernik scored his third goal of the night on a shorthanded shot. Dan Buccella set up Rebernik beautifully and was awarded with an assist at 8:40. The momentum continued in Pensacola's favor when Brian Deeth put the puck in the goal at 10:29 with another shorthanded point. Dan Buccella received another assist on the play along with Lorne Misita.

Jamie Gilbert was fantastic between the pipes for Pensacola, saving 30 of the 31 shots that Columbus slung at him. With the win and Knoxville's loss to Louisiana, the Ice Flyers move into sole possession of fourth place in the SPHL standings. To commemorate being the top two Stars of the Game, Jamie Gilbert and Chris Rebernik pleased the crowd to the sounds of the ?Cupid Shuffle.? Despite a lack of sequins, the Ice Flyers duo displayed a routine likely to be picked up for the 2014 Winter Games. An Olympic judge could not be reached for comment.
