Abbotsford Heat News Release
The Abbotsford Heat begin the week in 5th place in the North Division, one point back of the Lake Erie Monsters for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Division. The HEAT was 1-1 over the past seven days, as they split a pair of home games versus the red hot Chicago Wolves. The Wolves won the opener on Thursday night 3-2, as Matt Anderson was able to jam a rebound past David Shantz with just 1:38 to secure the win for the Wolves. The following evening, Gord Baldwin notched his first two goals of the season as the Heat went nine rounds before securing a 3-2 shootout win over the Wolves. Evan Barlow, Garth Murray and Colin Stuart scored the shootout goals, while David Shantz stopped seven of nine shootout attempts, including the last six attempts faced to earn the Heat their first win in seven starts.
The Toronto Maple Leafs affiliate, the Toronto Marlies will play the HEAT twice, this Monday and Tuesday night at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, to start off the week. The Marlies are currently tied for sixth place in the North Division, six points back of the HEAT. The teams have met three times this season, with the HEAT holding a 2-1 advantage so far, including wins in the last two contests.
HEAT Head Coach Jim Playfair (right, picture courtesy of the Abby News), is shown here lighting the Olympic Torch in Abbotsford this past Sunday. Playfair, born in Fort St. James, BC, was part of the Olympic torch relay that passed thru Abbotsford on the way to Vancouver for the opening of the Olympic Games this Friday evening.
The Heat will begin their longest road trip of the season, due to the Olympic Games. A nine game marathon will see the HEAT end this week with a pair of games versus their division opponents, the Rochester Americans (Friday) and the Hamilton Bulldogs (Saturday). Abbotsford will move on to play the Marlies next Monday afternoon in Toronto, before heading to the US Northeast with pairs of games versus Providence, Bridgeport and Worcester.
