Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, Pa. - Washington Wild Things outfielder Phil Laurent's season may have ended early, but his off-season has been busy as he takes on a new role with a sport complex near his hometown in Illinois.
Laurent, who appeared in 49 games for the Wild Things in 2009 and was sixth in the league with a.335 batting average before suffering a season-ending knee injury on July 29, is currently serving as the on-site manager for the Dragon's Dome in Pekin, Ill. He is in charge of all sport programming for the facility and will serve as the principal baseball instructor for youth programs and camps.
The Dragon's Dome is a 29-acre complex offering indoor and outdoor facilities for a variety of sports. The Dome itself is a 78,000 square-foot inflatable structure that offers sports and event opportunities for all ages. In his new position, Laurent hopes to implement many changes for the organization, including a renewed focus on one-on-one instruction for young athletes. "I am passionate about working with kids," Laurent said. "() will give us a chance to provide opportunities for all kids in all sports."
While his role with the Dragon's Dome is new, Laurent has experience in baseball instruction through The Hitting Center, a facility owned and operated by his father in Springfield, Ill. The father and son's involvement in the Pekin facility expands their ability to offer clinics and tournaments.
Despite his involvement with the Dragon's Dome, Laurent still plans to play baseball in 2010. However, he is happy to have a job in sports waiting after his playing days are over, and hopes to work in the industry for the rest of his life.
