GORHAM, Maine - Bryan Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) notched a pair of goals as the U.S. National Under-18 Team defeated NCAA Division III opponent University of Southern Maine, 5-2, here today at USM Ice Arena.

Dan Rautenberg put the Huskies on the board first when his wrist shot sailed over goaltender Jack Campbell's (Port Huron, Mich.) glove 4:08 into the game. Team USA struck back at 9:28 after Rust snapped a shot over netminder Tim Gerrish from the high slot. Michael Mersch (Park Ridge, Ill.) gave the U.S. a 2-1 lead when he slid the puck under Gerrish from inside the right faceoff circle at 10:56.

The Huskies knotted the score with a power-play tally just 2:12 into the second stanza after Chris Travis skated in from the left point and wristed a shot past Campbell from the slot. The U.S. answered with a power-play goal of its own when Rust re-directed Derek Forbort's (Duluth, Minn.) left-point feed at 7:27 to regain the one-goal advantage.

With 5:50 remaining in the final stanza, Nick Shore (Denver, Colo.) stripped the puck off a USM defender and wired a wrist shot over the outstretched glove of Gerrish to make it 4-2. Jason Zucker (Las Vegas, Nev.) scored with just 1:24 remaining in regulation to account for the 5-2 final.

Campbell made 13 stops to earn the victory.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team returns to the Ann Arbor Ice Cube Saturday (Jan. 30) when it meets United States Hockey League East Division foe Waterloo Black Hawks at 7:05 p.m. EST.
