FARGO, N.D. - Despite a 37-save effort from goaltender Matt McNeely (Burnsville, Minn.), the U.S. National Under-17 Team fell to the Fargo Force, 4-3, in a shootout here tonight at the Urban Plains Center.

Team USA got on the board first in the opening period thanks to a shorthanded goal off the stick of Cole Bardreau (Fairport, N.Y.) 6:20 into the game. Corey Leivermann knotted the score when his tough-angle shot banked off McNeely and into the net three minutes later.

With just 1:36 remaining in the second stanza, a U.S. defender's clearing attempt bounced off the leg of Matt Leitner and past McNeely to give the Force a 2-1 advantage.

Adam Reid (Chino Hills, Calif.) knocked home a rebound, off of a Rocco Grimaldi (Rossmoor, Calif.) shot, from the top of the crease 5:53 into the third period to tie the score. Team USA took a 3-2 lead when Robbie Russo (Westmont, Ill.) followed Bardreau's rebound and wristed a shot under netminder Dayn Belfour's right arm at 10:22. Fargo knotted it back up just 2:26 later when Oleg Yevenko's right-point shot snuck just inside the left post.

Neither team found the go-ahead goal at the end of regulation or the ensuing overtime period, which left the game to be decided in a shootout.

Fargo's Garrett Allen was the only shooter to find the back of the net, allowing the Force to skate away with the 4-3 victory.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team returns to home ice Friday (Jan. 29) against USHL East Division foe Waterloo Black Hawks at 7:05 p.m. EST at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.
