Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
A 34-save performance by Waterloo Black Hawk goaltender C.J. Motte propelled the home team to a 3-2 win against the Youngstown Phantoms at Young Arena Friday.
Motte made 13 stops in both the second and third periods, looking especially sharp with his glove, to help preserve an early Black Hawk lead. The victory moves Motte's personal record to 11-11-0, while the team rose to 16-16-2.
Waterloo pulled ahead on Jamie Hill's power play redirection of a Jacob MacDonald shot 14:38 into the game. Less than four minutes later, MacDonald scored his first USHL goal on a feed out of the leftwing corner from J.T. Brown.
Near the end of the second period, Youngstown got on the board; after a scramble around the Black Hawk net, Andrew Lamont pushed the puck over the goal line. Waterloo went back ahead by two when Brown banged in a rebound after a successful penalty kill at 7:41 of the third. A Phantom power play goal with 3:02 remaining made for an exciting ending, but Motte and the Hawks held on for their eleventh home victory.
Waterloo is on home ice again Saturday against the Omaha Lancers at 7:05. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Black Hawks/Martin Brothers reusable shopping bag, and after the game, the Hawks' special John Deere jerseys will be auctioned off to benefit youth hockey in Waterloo.
