Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs dropped the first of five straight contests against the Odessa Jackalopes Wednesday night at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley, falling by a 4-2 mark to the Central Hockey League-leading club.
Chris Bartolone extended his current scoring streak to six games with his team-leading 18th power-play point, cutting Arizona's deficit to one at 14:45 of the first period.
Rob Lehtinen and Steve Potvin paired to win the ensuing face-off, sending the puck to the point before Bartolone fired a slap shot high glove side past Joel Martin just eight seconds into the Sundogs' first man-advantage opportunity of the game.
Arizona remains winless on the year against Odessa, falling to 0-4 against the Southern Conference opponent.
The Jackalopes needed just over a minute of play Wednesday to open a one-goal lead as Patrick Mbaraga picked up his first goal of the season with a shot on net from the far point that changed direction before finding its way past Doug Groenestege 1:11 into the contest.
Odessa stretched its lead to two at the 5:06 mark, converting on an Arizona turnover at its own blue line.
Intercepting an errant pass just inside the Sundogs' zone, Kory Karlander netted his 14th of the year, beating Groenestege with a wrist shot from between the circles.
The Jackalopes reclaimed a two-goal cushion on a Jeff Pierce power-play goal from Collin Circelli 9:19 into the second period, countering on a Sundogs' shorthanded chance the other way.
Jean Bourbeau stretched Odessa's lead to 4-1 midway through the final period with a shorthanded breakaway chance, skating across the top of the goal crease before sliding the puck past the outstretched leg of Groenestege.
Andrew Winnik closed out scoring with 5:46 to play in regulation with his first goal since joining the Sundogs, firing a low wrist shot past Martin from just inside the near circle.
Groenestege denied Kenny Bernard on a penalty shot at the 16:39 mark after the forward was hooked to the ice by Bartolone.
Shots were 31-21 in favor of the Jackalopes. Both clubs finished 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
The two teams battle again Friday at 7:05pm at Tim's Toyota Center. Tickets start at just $14 and are available by phone at 1-866-4-GET-TIX (1-866-443-8849), online at www.gettix.net and in person at the Tim's Toyota Center Box Office.
