
Murphy Named New Hampshire Sportscaster Of Year

Manchester, NH - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, are proud to announce that team play-by-play broadcaster Mike Murphy has been honored as the 2009 New Hampshire Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA).
It is the fifth overall award for Murphy and second consecutive year he has been recognized in the voting by Granite State sportscasters and sportswriters.
He will be honored at the 51st annual NSSA Awards Program in Salisbury, NC, May 1-3, along with Allen Lessels of the New Hampshire Union Leader, who was named the 2009 New Hampshire Sportswriter of the Year.
"Congratulations to Murph on another well-deserved New Hampshire Sportscaster of the Year Award," said Fisher Cats President/General Manager Rick Brenner.
"His voice has been synonymous with the Fisher Cats radio broadcasts for six years, and we are excited to give our fans the opportunity to hear Mike and Bob Lipman once again for the call of our games on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network in 2010."
"We also want to extend our congratulations to Allen Lessels, who has been very thorough, professional and informative in his reporting on the Fisher Cats for the New Hampshire Union Leader," Brenner said.
Murphy and Lipman will combine to broadcast all 142 Fisher Cats regular season games on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network (WGIR AM-610, Manchester (flagship); WGIN AM-930, Rochester; WTSL AM-1400/FM-94.3, Hanover; WEEY FM-93.5, Keene; WSMN AM-1590, Nashua) beginning on Thursday, April 8, when the Fisher Cats open the season against the New Britain Rock Cats in a 6:35pm game at New Britain Stadium.
United Way Opening Day at Merchantsauto.com Stadium is set for Thursday, April 15, at 6:35pm against the Binghamton Mets.
In addition to his radio duties with the Fisher Cats, Murphy is also the team's Director of Media Relations and a Ticket Sales Account Executive.
His radio assignments include providing color commentary for University of New Hampshire football and men's/women's basketball games; serving as the play-by-play voice of UNH women's hockey; hosting the weekly UNH Coach's Show on the Wildcat Sports Radio Network and the "Sports Zone" sports talk show on WTPL 107.7 FM in Concord.
The 2009 National Sportscaster of the Year is Jim Nantz of CBS Sports and the National Sportswriter of the Year is Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe.
Baseball's Peter Gammons and football's John Madden are this year's inductees into the NSSA Hall of Fame.
