American's Mercer Brings Leadership To Greenhawks

Maryland GreenHawks News Release

ROCKVILLE, MD. The Maryland GreenHawks signed former American University point guard and 2009 Patriot league player of the year Derrick Mercer to their team this week, adding another local favorite to compliment Byron Mouton.

"It's a great opportunity for me to stay in shape and advance my career," Mercer said. "I have much respect for the organization and am excited to be a part of it. Also being able to play with Scooter and Byron, while bringing my leadership experience, is a great opportunity."

After Leading American to the NCAA tournament in his junior and senior seasons, Mercer was the 15th pick in the fourth round of the NBDL draft by the Erie BayHawks. Now he looks to bring his winning experience and leadership to the GreenHawks.

"Derrick is a floor general who can single handily change the tempo of the game," said GreenHawks General Manager Adam Dantus. "His speed, explosiveness as well as his NCAA tournament experience is a huge addition to our team."

Mercer was signed after the team moved Lou White to injured reserves.
