Alabama Vipers News Release
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Alabama Vipers have announced the signing of five more players for the upcoming 2010 Arena Football One season.
It's a mix that includes an Arena Football League veteran, a pair of former All-SEC linemen and a pair of experienced arenafootball2 quarterbacks who are well known to Vipers fans.
Alabama has been assigned six-year AFL standout and former Virginia defensive back Ahmad Hawkins, ex-Auburn offensive lineman Monreko Crittendon and former South Carolina offensive lineman Jabari Levey.
Vipers quarterback Kevin Eakin and Bossier City quarterback Andrico Hines - both superstars at the af2 level - also have been assigned to Alabama.
"These are five quality signings for the Vipers organization,'' Alabama coach Dean Cokinos said.
"All of these guys are dynamic players with a good blend of Arena and/or NFL experience and all possess strong division one college backgrounds. Additionally, they are also high character, team oriented individuals who should fit in nicely with our philosophy in Huntsville."Â
Hawkins (5-foot-10, 191 pounds) tenure in the AFL included stints with Colorado, Nashville and Grand Rapids, where he led the rampage with 97.5 tackles and six interceptions in 2008.
Crittendon (6-4, 358) was a three-year starter at Auburn and signed with the Baltimore Ravens in 2004. His last AFL action was the Los Angeles Avengers in '08. Levey (6-6, 315) signed with Oakland in 2006, spent that spring with Berlin of NFL Europe and then attended camp with Tampa Bay in '07. He split the '08 season between Philadelphia in the AFL and Montreal in the Canadian Football League.
Both Eakin and Hines put up some impressive numbers over the final few af2 seasons. Eakin, a Fordham product with NFL and CFL experience, threw for 3,945 yards with 85 touchdowns and six interceptions during the 2009 regular season and totaled 2,515 with 51 and seven in the Vipers '08 championship run.
Hines (6-2, 215) compiled 3,214 yards with 76 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2009. The former Middle Tennessee State star totaled 5,580 passing yards, 129 touchdowns and 19 interceptions with Spokane and South Georgia during the '07 and '08 seasons.
