Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
An unlikely rally fell just short Friday in a 6-5 Waterloo Black Hawks loss to the Des Moines Buccaneers at Young Arena.
Trailing 6-1 through 40 minutes, the Hawks sprang back into the game with a rousing third period. In the seconds after a Des Moines power play ended, Zach Palmquist swiped a puck in the neutral zone, skated in, and fired it between Eric Mihalik's pads with 16:45 remaining. There was still 12:02 left on the clock when Palmquist scored again, with the Black Hawks' net empty, turning a four-on-four situation into a five-on-four advantage. On a power play and with the open net/extra attacker, Tyler Barnes drew Waterloo back within two when the puck found him with an open side at 14:08. Twenty-four seconds later, after a faceoff win, Brock Montpetit's shot trickled through Mihalek. The Hawks had several opportunities to tie the game in the final five minutes, lobbing a total of 19 shots to the net during the third period.
In spite of the comeback, the Black Hawks never led. The Buccaneers scored three goals in each of the first two periods. The only Waterloo tally in that time was a J.T. Brown power play goal 13:01 into the game. Connor Brickley scored twice and was one of five Buccaneers with a multipoint effort. Ryan Walters led the way for Des Moines with a goal and two assists. Mihalik finished the game with 32 saves.
Saturday the Hawks hope to play all three periods like Friday's final frame when they visit the RoughRiders at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena, beginning at 7:05.
