
Toros Fall in Matinee

AUSTIN, Texas Dec. 8 - The Austin Toros dropped to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the annual schoolhouse jam game early Tuesday at the Austin Convention Center falling 97-88.
Both teams came out strong in the first quarter exchanging baskets with nine lead changes. Justin Bowen gave the Toros a 21-20 lead after a dunk with two seconds left in the quarter. Dwayne Jones led the Toros with eight points in the quarter and had the first six points for the Toros.
At halftime the Toros had a nine-point lead after outscoring the Vipers 35-27. Forward Alonzo Gee had 14 points and three rebounds in the quarter. The Toros shot 65 percent in the paint to the Vipers 45 percent.
The Vipers fought back in the third behind Harris who had 13 points in the quarter after he nailed three shots from behind the arch. After a mid-quarter 12-0 run, the game was tied at 62. The Vipers continued their strong play in the fourth quarter and held the Toros to just 11 points.
The Vipers were lead by Antonio Anderson and Michael Harris with 28 and 27 points, both having 11 rebounds. Jones, the adidas Player of the Game, finished with 29 points and 13 rebounds. Curtis Jerrells contributed another 21 points and 9 assists and Gee added 20 points and 11 rebounds.
The Toros next game will be Wednesday December 9, when they host the Albuquerque Thunderbirds at the Austin Convention Center at 7:30 pm.
