Knoxville Ice Bears News Release
The Knoxville Ice Bears took on the Pensacola Ice Flyers for the first time in Knoxville tonight at the Civic Coliseum. Thanks to former Ice Flyer Taylor Hustead, the Ice Bears put the first point on the board with less than a minute to in the first period. However, Pensacola answered back quickly after the start of the second period. Defenseman Jeff Zatorski scored a goal assisted by Mike Tuomi and Baylor Dieter.
Fans saw several familiar faces on the ice for Pensacola tonight. Defenseman Matt Withers and forwards Mike Tuomi and Chris Rebernik have all worn Ice Bears jerseys in the past.
The Ice Flyers flew past the Ice Bears in the third with a goal by center Rob Campbell and assisted by Withers, but Knoxville sent the game into overtime with a tied scored of 2-2. Forward Frank Furdero's goal was assisted by Mike Bulawka and Bobby Joe Pelkey. Captain Kevin Swider scored the game-winning goal in overtime. The last two Knoxville goals were power play goals.
The standings show how much parody there is in the Southern Professional Hockey League. At the start of tonight's game, the Pensacola Ice Flyers were in second place with 16 points, and the Knoxville Ice Bears were in sixth place with 14 points.
The Ice Bears play at home on Saturday, December 5 for Tattoo Night. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. as the Ice Bears take on the Fayetteville FireAntz.
