Black Hawks Sweep Weekly Awards

November 30, 2009 - United States Hockey League (USHL) Waterloo Black Hawks

Waterloo, Iowa-Waterloo Black Hawks players earned all three of the United States Hockey League's weekly honors after winning three games in four days last week, according to the USHL Monday.

The league designated Brock Montpetit its Reebok Offensive Player of the Week, Dan Sova the CCM Defensive Player of the Week, and C.J. Motte the USHL Goalie of the Week, following wins against the Omaha Lancers, Cedar Rapids Rough Riders, and Indiana Ice before, on, and after Thanksgiving.

"This stretch has been a big lift for our whole organization, and I'm very proud of Brock, Dan, and C.J., who have all been leading with words and by example," said Waterloo Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley. "There were a lot of players who contributed to our success last week, but it would have been tough to do what we did without the three of them."

Black Hawk Captain Brock Montpetit had three points in each of the three Black Hawks wins. He finished the stretch with four goals and five assists, in addition to a +6 rating. Montpetit is now the Black Hawks' leading scorer this season. His 96 career points rank 23rd all-time for the franchise.

Sova, an assistant Captain, had two points in each game and by the end of the week recorded two goals and four assists. The two goals matched his total from 55 games in the 2008-2009 season. Besides joining the offense, he was also responsible defensively, recording a +8 rating. Sova is committed to Michigan Tech for the 2010-2011 season.

In net, Motte brought his personal record to 6-6-0, and his four-game winning streak matches the team's recent run. Motte turned away 89 of 96 shots he faced, including shorthanded breakaways during the opening period against both the Omaha Lancers and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.

All three players are winning a USHL weekly award for the first time. Earlier this month, Zach Palmquist and Steve Racine were the CCM Defensive Player of the Week and USHL Goalie of the Week respectively for the Black Hawks.

Waterloo plays a weekend home-and-home series against the Green Bay Gamblers starting Friday. After visiting the Resch Center, the Hawks host Green Bay Saturday at 7:05. The game is a college night, sponsored by iWireless, with $5 admission for all college students with valid id. The first 2,500 fans of all ages will also receive a Black Hawks window sticker courtesy of Famous Dave's.
