Goldeyes Well Represented In Winter Ball

Teammates in 2009 with the Goldeyes, Juan Diaz and Kevin West find themselves as opponents these days in Colombia.

The two sluggers are among a handful of players with ties to Winnipeg that have extended their respective seasons by playing winter ball. Through 25 games with Cartagena, Diaz is batting.258 with a league-best six home runs while driving in a team-leading 17 runs.

West, meanwhile, is hitting.320 with three homers and 19 RBIs in 29 games for Sincelejo. His RBIs are good for fifth in the league while his average puts him eighth. Among his teammates familiar to Goldeyes fans is Antoin Gray, who played second base for Winnipeg in 2007 & 2008.

The newest member of the Goldeyes, outfielder Aharon Eggleston is on a Monteria squad with former Fish pitchers Cristian Mendoza (2008) and Manny Basilio (2007). In 26 games, Eggleston is batting.270 with one home run and 12 RBIs.

Over in Venezuela, pitchers Roger Luque (2003-2005), Juan Ovalles (2004) and Ivan Blanco (2008) are teammates in Lara, Nibaldo Acosta (2007) is with La Guaira while catcher Luis Alen (2007) is with Anzoategui.

A little closer to home, pitcher Bill Pulsipher (2009) is in Puerto Rico with Arecibo.

FISH FOOD: As of Friday morning, roughly 25 spots remained for the Goldeyes Holiday Skills Camp for boys and girls ages 7 to 12 set for Saturday, December 19 at the Duckworth Centre.
