Suns starter Graham Taylor (2-0) picked up the victory, giving up one run, five hits and one walk over six-plus innings of work. Smokies starter and Jacksonville resident Jeremy Papelbon (0-1) fell in the loss, allowing the two sixth inning runs on five total hits with one walk and seven strikeouts over five and one-thirds innings. Matt Peterson (2) saved the game with a perfect ninth inning.
After the starting pitchers battled through the first five innings scoreless, Jacksonville cracked the scoreboard in their third turn through the lineup against Papelbon.
Bryan Petersen led off with a single and moved to second on a bunt from Ryan Klosterman. On the bunt, Tennessee catcher Robinson Chirinos threw late to second base while trying for a force out. Logan Morrison next singled into centerfield to score Petersen for a 1-0 lead while moving Klosterman to third base. Mike Stanton then doubled into the left field corner to drive in Klosterman for a 2-0 advantage.
Tennessee answered with a run charged to Taylor in the seventh inning. Tyler Colvin led off and reached on a third strike wild pitch, moved to third on a Starlin Castro single and scored on a double play ground ball from Robinson Chirinos for a 2-1 score.
Suns reliever Kasey Olenberger allowed a leadoff, eighth inning hit before putting the next three hitters down in order before Peterson saved the game with a perfect ninth.
