Worcester Tornadoes News Release

WORCESTER, MA--- It was not quite how the Tornadoes envisioned game one ending taking a three run lead into the eighth, but a win is a win. Derek McDaid's wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth gives Worcester an 8-7 win and a 1-0 series lead.

Again it was the Tornadoes to take control of the game early on with three runs in the third against rookie right-hander James Kukucka. Chris Colabello's one run double and Carlos Sosa two run homer doing the damage.

Colabello was not finished after the first at bat. His third long ball of the post season in the seventh capped a 3-4, three RBI night. He is now 8-13 (.615) with seven runs batted in and three homeruns in the 2009 post season. Ryan Lobban, in his second game one start of the post season, twirled a five and two third, four run, four strikeout outing. He would leave in line for the victory, but Quebec had other ideas.

The Capitales used two three run innings of their own, in the sixth and eighth to tie the game up at seven in the eighth. RBI's came from five different Caps including a pair from Goeffrey Tomlinson on a single. Anthony Sullivan's (1-0) scoreless ninth, with a highlight catch from center fielder Lucas Taylor, set the stage for the bottom of the inning.

Jeff LaHair led off with a bloop single, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Taylor (with two strikes), and a move-him-over ground ball from Mike MacMillan that put him ninety feet away. Brett Palanski (0-1) exited in favor of closer Derek McDaid, to face the hot Colabello. The second pitch to the plate went sailing past the Quebec catcher and to the backstop, scoring LaHair.

Tomorrow at 7:05 in the final game of the 2009 season at the HIP, Worcester will send Chris Farley (1-0) to the hill in search of a 2-0 series lead against the Capitales Michel Simard (1-0). Tickets available at www.worcestertornadoes.com.
