Diamond Jaxx cruise past Barons to take series opener

JACKSON, TENN. (AUGUST 22, 2009) - The Diamond Jaxx (30-26) score seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruise to an 11-3 win over the Birmingham Barons (35-21) at Pringles Park. The Jaxx batted 12 in the first inning and got homers from Travis Garcia and Greg Halman to cap off the seven run, seven hit inning. In front of 3,661 fans at Pringles Park, the Jaxx belted three homers in the game to take the first of five at Pringles Park. Travis Garcia led the Jaxx offense by driving in four runs. Robert Rohrbaugh (2-3) tallied his first win since coming off of the disabled list by working six innings on Saturday night. Rohrbaugh allowed just one earned run on five hits, while striking out five and walking none. With the victory, the Diamond Jaxx stay on top of the North Division by a game over the Tennessee Smokies.

The Jaxx exploded in the first inning on Saturday night for seven runs. Greg Halman got the scoring started with a solo homerun to right, his first long ball since July 22nd. Halman is now tied for the league lead with 22 homers. Johan Limonta, Callix Crabbe and Rich Poythress all tallied RBI singles, giving the Jaxx a 4-0 advantage. With two runners on, Travis Garcia smacked a three-run homerun giving the Jaxx a 7-0 lead. Matt Mangini also singled in the first, extending his hitting streak to 11 games.

The starter for Huntsville, Johnny Lowe (0-3) lasted just 2/3 of an inning, yielding seven runs on seven hits. Lowe walked one batter and struck out none. He was relieved by Justin Cassel who saved the Barons bullpen by dealing 6.1 innings of relief. Cassel gave up three earned runs on eight hits.

The Barons answered the Jaxx tally in the top of the second with a run. A leadoff double by David Cook set up a run-scoring error off the bat of John Shelby. The Jaxx led the Barons after two, 7-1.

The Jaxx pushed another run across in the bottom of the sixth inning. Travis Garcia brought in Rich Poythress with sacrifice fly to center. Garcia finished the game 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBI.

Guillermo Quiroz added some more cushion to the Diamond Jaxx lead by hitting a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning. The homer by Quiroz provided the Diamond Jaxx with a 11-2 advantage. The Barons added one more run in the eighth, but the Jaxx cruised to the 11-3 victory. Kyle Parker made his first appearance since July 22nd, working a scoreless ninth for the D-Jaxx.

The Jaxx look to take game two of the series on Sunday, at Pringles Park with game beginning at 2:05. The Jaxx will trot out RHP Luis Munoz (7-6, 4.35) and the Barons will start RHP Matt Long (5-3, 2.59). The Jaxx lead the Southern League North by a game over the Tennessee Smokies with 14 games remaining.
