Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Josh Banks turned in eight solid innings, Russ Adams had three doubles and two RBIs and the Portland Beavers earned their first series victory since early July by beating the Iowa Cubs 8-1 before 9,645 Friday night at PGE Park.

Drew Macias was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk, Eliezer Alfonzo belted his 12th home run and Sean Kazmar drove in two runs for the Beavers, who have won four of their last five games. It was Portland's first win of a four-game series since the club took three-of-four from Colorado Springs at PGE Park, July 4-7.

Banks (7-6), who snapped a personal three-game losing streak, allowed just one run on nine hits while walking none and striking out five for the win.

The Beavers loaded the bases with one out in the first and took an early lead when Macias, who singled, scored from third as Kazmar lifted a sac fly to center.

Portland then tacked on single runs in the third and fourth. Adams reached on a one-out double and scored on Chad Huffman's single while Kazmar's RBI single knocked in Macias in the fourth for a 3-0 Portland lead.

The Beavers spotted the Cubs a run in the top of the fifth, but Alfonzo made it 5-1 in the bottom of the inning with a two-run shot that cleared the boardwalk in left field.

Adams highlighted a three-run bottom of the sixth with a two-run double to right. Huffman then capped the scoring with a run-scoring fly to center that allowed Craig Stansberry to come home.

Current Cubs infielder and former Southridge High School and Oregon State standout Dwayne Barney was 2-for-4 and drove with a double and drove in Iowa's only run with a fifth-inning single. Iowa's Andres Blanco also doubled three times in the game.

The Beavers travel to Sacramento on Saturday to begin a four-game series; first pitch is 7:05 p.m.
