Salem RidgeYaks News Release
SALEM, VA-Infielder Kris Negron has been traded to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for big league shortstop Alex Gonzalez.
The 23-year-old Negron was batting .264 on the season with 20 stolen bases. He provided defensive stability throughout the season with the loss of infielders Aaron Reza and Yamaico Navarro to injury for much of the year. Negron realizes that with this move it brings new opportunities to the sure-handed middle infielder.
"I am pretty excited to get an opportunity to go with another organization," said Negron. "I'm thankful Boston gave me the opportunity, but at the same time I am excited."
Losing infielder Kris Negron not only means the loss of a bat and glove, but also a team leader. Manager Chad Epperson realizes that moves like these are commonplace in the game of professional baseball.
"It shows that when you get drafted by an organization it doesn't mean that you will stay with that organization.," said manager Chad Epperson. "Negron is versatile and brings a lot to the table for a club."
Shortstop Alex Gonzalez played with the Red Sox during the 2006 season before leaving to join the Reds. After a successful 2007 season, Gonzalez suffered a knee fracture and missed the 2008 season. He has a .210 batting average with three homeruns this season.
The Salem Red Sox begin a three game series tonight against Southern Division rival Kinston Indians at 7:05 PM. Former Salem Red Sox RHP Brian Price will start for Kinston.
