Chicago Fire FC News Release

With their home win Saturday night over the San Jose Earthquakes at TOYOTA PARK, the Chicago Fire (7-3-7, 28 pts.) collected three points that give the team sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference standings entering MLS Week 18. In their second match up of the season, the Fire will travel to Seattle for a game on Saturday, July 25 (2 p.m. CT) against the Sounders FC (7-3-7, 28 pts.) at Qwest Field that will be broadcast on ESPN. This match will be the only MLS league match televised on ESPN, as opposed to ESPN2.

The Fire and Seattle tied 1-1 in their first meeting this season at TOYOTA PARK on May 2nd with midfielder Marco Pappa providing the Fire's goal. After a scoreless first half, the Fire opened scoring as Cuauhtémoc Blanco slotted a ball from deep in the right side of the box to Pappa at the top of the area. Pappa placed a low ball into the right side of the net past goalkeeper Kasey Keller for the one goal advantage. With the goal, Pappa became the first player to score a goal on Seattle goalkeeper Kasey Keller in MLS play. The Sounders answered just six minutes later as defender Tyrone Marshall finished on a corner kick from designated player Freddie Ljungberg for the game-tying goal.

The Fire will be without the services of defender Bakary Soumare who picked up his fifth yellow card of the season last Saturday against the Earthquakes and will serve a one game suspension for yellow card accumulation.

Both teams have a record of 7-3-7 heading into the match and while the Fire are atop the Eastern Conference Standings, Seattle sits just behind the Houston Dynamo (9-4-5, 32 pts.) in second place in the West.

BLANCO VOTED MLS PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR GOAL AND ASSIST AGAINST SAN JOSE

Fire midfielder Cuauhtémoc Blanco was voted Major League Soccer's Player of the Week for Week 18 of the 2009 season. Blanco came on in the 60th minute and sparked the Fire with a goal and an assist in Chicago's 2-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes. Blanco's impact was felt in the 82nd minute when he settled the ball at the top of the San Jose penalty area, cut to avoid a tackle, and sent a deft lob over the San Jose defense to a Patrick Nyarko. Nyarko connected with Blanco's pass, directing the ball past diving San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon. Blanco put the finishing touch on the match with a goal of his own in the 92nd minute. With San Jose passing in its own end, defender Wilman Conde intercepted a pass at the top of the box and quickly played a pass through to Blanco, who from 17-yards out stylishly chipped it over Cannon, into the right corner. With the 2-0 victory, the Chicago Fire are first in the Eastern Conference with a 7-3-7 record and 28 points. Blanco's assist, his League-leading seventh of the season, helped break a three-game scoreless streak for the Chicago Fire at TOYOTA PARK. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com.
