DES MOINES -- Steve Clevenger drove in John-Ford Griffin in the bottom of the ninth inning with the winning run in Iowa's 2-1 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Saturday evening at Principal Park.

With the win, the Cubs trimmed the Sounds' lead in the PCL American Northern Division to four games. Iowa scored single runs in each of its last two trips to the plate to record the win.

Griffin led off the ninth with double off Sounds reliever David Johnson, then advanced to third base on a sharp single to right field by Matt Craig before coming around on Clevenger's second walk-off hit this season.

Trailing 1-0 in the eighth, Aaron Miles lined a one-out double down the right field line off Nashville starter Lindsay Gulin that scored Matt Camp from second base and tied the game at one.

Both starting pitchers turned in solid outings.

Iowa starter Casey Fossum allowed just one unearned run in six innings of work. In just his third start with the Cubs, the left-hander allowed five hits and one walk while striking out six.

Gulin kept the Iowa Cubs off balance for seven plus innings as the Sounds took a 1-0 lead into the eighth.

The Sounds plated their lone run in the first inning when Alcides Escobar reached on an error and was driven in on Angel Salome's RBI single. A pitchers duel then paced the game until the final two frames.

Gulin allowed two hits and walked four while striking out five in his seven innings. The crafty left-hander held the Cubs hitless until Steve Clevenger singled to right field leading off the fifth inning.

Blake Parker (1-1) picked up his first win of the season for the Cubs. He did not allow a hit in his one inning pitched. Johnson (2-1) was tagged with the loss and blown save .

The Cubs and Sounds will meet in the finale of their four-game set on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Right-hander Mitch Atkins (6-9, 6.82) is scheduled to pitch for Iowa and left-hander Chris Narveson (3-3, 3.38) will take the ball for the Sounds. Sunday's game marks the final meeting this season between the division rivals.
