June 30, 2009 - Southern League (SL1)
Tennessee Smokies News Release
SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies did their best "anything you can do I can do better" impersonation Tuesday night against the Huntsville Stars, answering one-run Huntsville tallies in the first and sixth innings with six runs of their own en route to their second consecutive 7-2 win in front of 3,499 at Smokies Park. With the win, the Smokies (5-4, 37-42) are now tied with Huntsville (5-4, 43-35) for first in the second-half Southern League North Division race.
After Huntsville's John Raburn delivered a solo shot off Tennessee starter Hung-Wen Chen to kick off the first, the Smokies went to work with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to grab the lead. A Tony Thomas single brought in leadoff hitter Jonathan Mota from second for the team's first run. Marquez Smith then delivered a ground-rule double off Huntsville starter Bobby Bramhall, and scored on a Doug Deeds single to give the Smokies a 2-1 lead.
Huntsville tied up the game in the top of the sixth, as Raburn scored his second run of the game on a Kevin Melillo single to right.
The Smokies would come right back though in the bottom of the sixth and blow the game wide open. Smith started off the inning with his sixth home run of the year, a solo shot to left-center that gave the Smokies a 3-2 lead. RBI singles by Jim Adduci, Welington Castillo and Jonathan Mota brought around three more runs to give the Smokies a commanding 6-2 lead heading into the seventh.
Castillo doubled in the eighth for Tennessee, driving in another run to give the Smokies a 7-2 lead. He would finish the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Chen (4-6) picked up his first win since June 6, allowing only two runs on seven hits in six innings of work. Reliever Marco Carrillo struck out four total hitters in two innings of relief. Brian Schlitter threw a scoreless ninth in a non-save situation.
This week's Smokies/Stars series heads into the month of July, with Game 4-of-6 Wednesday night at Smokies Park. Former Smokies pitcher Mark Holliman (5-2, 4.61) will take the mound for Huntsville, with Jeremy Papelbon (2-4, 3.95) getting the call for Tennessee. Tickets to the game can be purchased at www.smokiesbaseball.com or by calling (865) 286-2300.
