Salem RidgeYaks News Release

Lynchburg, VA (June 30, 2009) - The Salem Red Sox finished June in style, clobbering Lynchburg 13-4 at City Stadium for their fifth win in six games to start the second half and their 12th win in the last 15 games dating back to the conclusion of the first half. Eight of the nine Red Sox batters recorded a hit, while six Sox hitters totalled multiple hits as Salem scored a season-high 13 runs. Tied 3-3 after three innings, the Red Sox broke it open with five in the fourth and three more in the fifth to lead 11-3. Up 11-4 in the eighth, Yamaico Navarro, who led the way with three hits, clocked his first homer of the season, a two-run shot off Harvey Garcia to make it 13-4.

Navarro finished a triple shy of the cycle while driving in a season-high three RBI, Che-Hsuan Lin scored three, drove in three, and hit his first triple of the season, and Tim Federowicz continued his torrid offensive pace with a pair of hits, including his first homer at the Advanced-A level, to help pace the Sox attack. After Salem plated three unearned runs in the first off Lynchburg starter Jeff Locke, the Red Sox began the fourth inning with five straight base hits, scoring at least five runs in an inning for the 14th time this season.

Locke was tagged for eight runs (five earned) over three plus innings, while Chris Cullen yielded three more Red Sox runs in the fifth and Garcia surrendered the two-run homer to Navarro in the eighth. The fourth pitcher for the Hillcats, Christian Castorri, struck out the side in the ninth, but it was too-little, too-late for the Hillcats staff that gave up season-highs in runs-allowed and hits-allowed.

The beneficiary of all the offense was Salem starter Eammon Portice, who worked around eight hits allowed to finish five innings and pick up his sixth win of the season. All three runs off Portice came in the third inning on Jordy Mercer's two-run triple and Matt Hague's ensuing sacrifice fly to right. Jason Rice struck out five over his two innings of work, allowing one run, while Robert Coello retired all six batters he faced, picking up one strikeout, over the final two innings.

In six games to start the second half, the Red Sox have scored 43 runs on 78 hits. They finish June with a 14-11 record, having brought their full-season mark to back within a game of .500 at 37-38.

Salem will seek a sweep of the brief two-game set at City Stadium on Wednesday evening, before proceeding to Myrtle Beach for four contests over the Fourth of July weekend with the Pelicans. Seth Garrison, fresh off tossing six shutout innings this past Friday in Kinston, gets the start for Salem against Lynchburg's Bryan Morris, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05.
