Smokies Announce a Pair of Roster Moves on Tuesday

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies, Class AA minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, announce a series of roster moves today. RHP Andrew Cashner and INF Nate Samson have been promoted from High-A Daytona. In corresponding moves, SS Darwin Barney has been promoted to Triple-A Iowa, while LHP Casey Lambert has been placed on the DL with left elbow stiffness.

Cashner was 0-0 with a 1.50 ERA in 12 starts with the Daytona Cubs this year, allowing 15 runs (seven earned) on 31 hits in 42 innings of work. He spent time in 2008 at three different levels in the Cubs' farm system. The native Texan was a first-round pick (19th overall) by Chicago in 2008 and is the fourth-ranked Chicago Cubs minor league prospect, according to Baseball America.

Samson comes to the Smokies after hitting .251 (52-for-207) for Daytona this year, collecting 26 RBIs. He spent most of his 2008 season with Low-A Peoria and hit .293 (141-for-481) with 42 RBIs. The Florida native was a 34th-round draft pick by the Chicago Cubs in 2006.

Barney hit .317 (80-for-252) for the Smokies, with three home runs and 32 RBIs. Last year, the Oregon State product hit .262 (107-for-409) for Daytona. Lambert was 5-5 with a 4.05 ERA this year with Tennessee. He has allowed 38 runs (30 earned runs) on 71 hits in 66.2 innings of work.
