Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Montreal, Quebec -- It didn't take long for Brandon Wheat King linemates Brayden Schenn and Scott Glennie to hear their names called at the National Hockey League Entry Draft in Montreal Friday night.

For the second year in a row, a Schenn was taken with the number five pick but this time, it was the Los Angeles Kings using the selection to grab the highly touted Wheat King center. Last season, Toronto traded up in order to get Brayden's older brother Luke with the fifth overall selection.

Meanwhile the Dallas Stars used the eighth overall pick to select Glennie, who became the top Manitoba born player to be chosen.

Friday's draft marked the first time in franchise history that the Wheat Kings have had two players chosen so high. Prior to this year, the best that Brandon had done was 1979 when four players including Laurie Boschman (9th overall by Toronto) and Brian Propp (14th overall by Philadelphia) were taken in round one.

A two time Wheat King scoring champion, Schenn scored 88 points including 32 goals during the 2008-09 campaign while Glennie finished the year with 28 goals and 70 points in 55 games.

"Brayden is of the power forward ilk," says NHL Director of Central Scouting E.J. McGuire. "He has learned a little about the NHL from his older brother Luke and he knows how to go to the net. He is a threat to score at all times on the ice and dishes the puck very effectively. He takes the puck to the net with the kind of authority that a Jonathan Cheechoo does, yet has puck dishing capabilities that maybe a Joe Thornton does. Both are tough players, both are tough to move out in front of the net and Brayden fits that perfectly."

As for Glennie, Stars' Director of Amateur Scouting Tim Bernhardt couldn't be happier about landing the 17-year old Winnipegger.

"Scott brings a lot of speed and skill. He has very good vision and sees the ice well. He's a right wing but he's also a centerman so we don't know what he'll play down the road...we're very pleased that we were able to draft Scott."

Internationally, Schenn has already won two gold medals representing Team Canada and is one of three Wheat Kings that will be off to the National Junior Selection Camp later this summer. Joining him will be defenceman Colby Robak and Glennie.

By going to Los Angeles and Dallas, Schenn and Glennie will be heading to NHL clubs that feature former members of the Wheat Kings' organization. While ex-Brandon goalkeeper Ron Hextall is currently the assistant general manager of the Kings, former Wheat Kings' coach and general manager Les Jackson is Dallas' director of Scouting and Development.

Rounds two through seven of this year's NHL draft are scheduled for Saturday with 17-year old Brandon defenceman Brodie Melnychuk expected to be taken.
