Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Winston-Salem, NC - Winston-Salem starting pitcher Levi Maxwell was recently named Carolina League Pitcher-of-the-Week for the period of June 15-21. He becomes the first Dash hurler to garner the weekly honor this season and joins outfielder Salvador Sanchez as the only Winston-Salem players to earn a weekly award.

Maxwell, who lost his first eight outings of the season, made one start for the week and it was a memorable one as the right-hander tossed a seven-inning no-hitter in the opener of doubleheader against Wilmington at Frawley Stadium on Friday, June 19. He faced the minimum number of batters even though he surrendered leadoff walks in the second, third and sixth innings. Maxwell picked Clint Robinson off first base in the second inning. Jamar Walton was also picked off first in the third inning and then Walton was thrown out trying to steal second base in the sixth inning.

Maxwell's no-hitter was the first thrown by an individual in the Carolina League since John Maine guided Frederick to a 3-0 no-hit win over Winston-Salem in seven innings on July 3, 2003. It's the first no-hitter for Winston-Salem since Delvin Lantigua combined with three relievers to beat Myrtle Beach on April 15, 2001. Steve Trachsel tossed the last individual no-hitter for Winston-Salem on July 12, 1991 in a 4-2 win over Peninsula.

Maxwell has won his last two starts and is currently 2-8 with a 4.82 ERA in 12 appearacnes (10 starts). The right-hander was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 18th round of the 2007 draft out of the University of West Virginia. In 2008, he went 15-5 with a 3.47 ERA with Low-A Kannapolis and tied for the South Atlantic League-lead in wins and complete games (two). He made four appearances (three starts) for Winston-Salem last season and went 0-1 with a 6.32 ERA. Maxwell will be honored on-field in a special ceremony as part of the Dash's Independence Day bash on July 2 at Wake Forest Baseball Park.

Winston-Salem will return to action on Thursday night when they open the second half of the season with a three-game series against the Frederick Keys at Harry Grove Stadium. The first pitch of the opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Dash will return to Wake Forest Baseball Park on Sunday, June 28 at 5 p.m. for a four-game series against the Potomac Nationals.

The Dash recently released the unique Five-Game Fireworks Plan, with four fireworks nights, including our special Independence Day show on July 2. Fans also receive a hot dog and soda at each game, a FREE Dash hat and kids can run the bases following each game. Single-game tickets are also available for games at Wake Forest Baseball Park and can be purchased online at www.wsdash.com or by calling the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
