State College Spikes News Release

A standing-room only sellout crowd of 5,593, the third largest in the history of Medlar Field at Lubrano Park was on hand for Opening Night as the Williamsport Crosscutters downed the State College Spikes, 15-2.

Medlar Field at Lubrano Park also welcomed its largest walk-up crowd ever as the Spikes inaugurated their schedule of Daily Fan Value Promotions with 4 for $44 Friday, giving fans the opportunity to purchase four Diamond Club seats behind home plate, four small sodas, and four hot dogs for only $44.

The crowd was just 78 fans short of the all-time record for single-game attendance at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. 5,671 fans saw the Spikes take on the Crosscutters on June 20, 2007.

The sellout crowd saw Williamsport break open the game with an eight-run fifth inning, snapping a 2-2 tie. The Crosscutters added five more runs in the ninth to provide late distance.

Williamsport left fielder Leandro Castro tied a Medlar Field at Lubrano Park record with five hits, including a home run in the ninth. T.J. Warren, the Crosscutters' designated hitter, tripled twice in the fifth inning and drove in a pair of runs.

For the Spikes, Andy Vasquez and Ciro Rosero each picked up two hits, and kyle Morgan and Matt Payne each went 1-for-3 with a double.

Siulman LeBron picked up the win for Williamsport, allowing two runs and six hits in 5-2/3 innings of work, while walking one and striking out five.

Tyler Cox took the loss for State College, allowing ten runs, but just four earned, in 4-2/3 innings. Cox also struck out four while walking one and allowing nine hits.

Saturday, the SawBuck Series moves to Historic Bowman Field in Williamsport, where the Crosscutters will host the Spikes for a 7:05 p.m. contest. Righty Quinton Miller makes his first start as a professional for the Spikes, while Williamsport counters with right-hander Jonathan Pettibone.

Tony Sanchez, the Pirates' first-round pick and fourth overall pick in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft, will join the team tomorrow, and is slated to remain with the Spikes through Wednesday, June 24.

Sunday, the Spikes return home to meet the Crosscutters at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for a 6:05 SawBuck Series matchup. It's the first Summer Blast-Off Sunday of the year, with a spectacular fireworks display presented by T&B Medical after the game, and a Pre-Game Catch on the Field before the game. Plus, members of Ike's Tikes, the State College Spikes' Kids Club can participate in the Kids Club Kickoff, and all kids can run the bases after the game.
