BayBears Drop Lead Late in Jacksonville

Mobile BayBears News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Wes Roemer cruised through most of the contest on Thursday night, but a three-run seventh inning brought the Jacksonville Suns back from behind as they defeated the BayBears 3-2 at the Baseball Grounds.

Roemer didn't allow a man to reach base until a double in the fifth inning by Mike Stanton, and he wasn't touched up for a run until the seventh. With the Suns (32-35) trailing 2-0, Andy Jenkins put the home team on the board with his first home run of the season.

Jacksonville wasn't done scoring in the seventh as Kevin Randel walked with two outs to chase Roemer from the ballgame. Scott Maine (2-1) replaced Roemer and coughed up a four-pitch walk to Bryan Petersen before Chris De La Cruz doubled down the third base line to bring home Randel and Petersen, taking the win away from Roemer and the BayBears (37-30).

The night started promisingly for the BayBears as they pounced on Jacksonville starter Willie Glen in the third inning. With one out, Mark Hallberg and Yunesky Sanchez reached on successive singles. Sean Coughlin, who went 3-for-3 on the night, followed suit with a single to right field that scooted underneath Stanton's glove and rolled toward the wall, allowing Hallberg and Sanchez to score the game's first two tallies.

In place of Glen, who only lasted five frames, the Jacksonville bullpen was sharp. Henry Owens tossed a scoreless sixth while Chris Leroux (3-2) kept the BayBears off the board in the seventh. With a lead to work with, Carlos Vasquez and Matt Peterson (S, 14) recorded the final six outs.

The BayBears had their chances as they left men in scoring position in each of the first three innings. Orlando Mercado was gunned down at the plate in the fourth while Pete Clifford was stranded at third to end the sixth.

Game three between the BayBears and Suns is Friday night at 6:05 central time with Cody Evans (3-6, 4.10) getting the start. The BayBears return home to host the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx on Monday, June 22 at 7:05 p.m. For Hank Aaron Stadium tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
