Charlotte Knights News Release
FORT MILL, S.C. - June 15, 2009 - Just 13 days ago, Jose Contreras was pitching for the Charlotte Knights against the Columbus Clippers. Jose came to Charlotte because he felt he needed to work on his pitches-particularly his fastball command and forkball. It worked out well for him. On Monday, Contreras was named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending June 14.
Contreras, 37, went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA (16.0 IP) in two starts last week, allowing only three hits while striking out 11 batters to lower his season ERA from 8.19 to 5.32. He gave up just one hit over 8.0 scoreless IP in game two of a doubleheader on June 8 vs. Detroit in his first major-league start since May 8.
Contreras asked to be sent to Charlotte and joined the Knights on May 12 going 3-1, with a 2.70 ERA and striking out 27 batters in 33.1 innings pitched. He nearly threw his first career no-hitter on May 18 vs. Toledo, going 7 2/3 innings before giving up a hit. Jose went on to get the complete game shutout 1-0, against the Mud Hens. He rejoined the White Sox on June 8.
The Charlotte Knights are the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. For ticket or event information, please contact the Knights front office at (704) 357-8071 or (803) 548-8050 or visit our website at www.charlotteknights.com for more information.
