Bats Can't Muster Any Offense, Fall to Paw Sox 2-0

Louisville Bats News Release

Louisville, KY - The Bats continued their series hosting the Pawtucket Red Sox Wednesday morning at Louisville Slugger Field. The Bats struggled to manufacture runs, or hits for that matter, as they fell 2-0 to the Sox. It was the final Education Day of the year for the Bats organization as 10,195 fans, including thousands of students, were on hand to watch the game.

Bats starter Matt Maloney (3-3, 2.31) had a strong performance, doing everything he could to stifle the Pawtucket offense. He went seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits, and walking two. Maloney also had seven strikeouts, as he took the loss for Louisville.

The Bats struggled to hit the elusive knuckleballer Charlie Zink, the reigning IL Pitcher of the Year. It wasn't until the fifth inning when Michael Griffin beat out an infield single to the Pawtucket shortstop Iggy Suarez that the Bats reached base with a hit. It would be the only Bats' hit of the evening and it is the second one-hitter thrown by the Pawtucket pitching staff in the last three games.

The Red Sox managed to score a run early to take the lead in the second inning. They got things started with a lead-off ground-rule double by Paul McAnulty, just out of the reach of Bats centerfielder Drew Stubbs. After tagging up and advancing to third on a fly ball, McAnulty scored courtesy of a John Otness single to left.

Pawtucket added another run in the seventh after a sacrifice fly by Angel Chavez scored Suarez, making it 2-0.

Relievers Ben Jukich and Josh Roenicke came into finish the game for the Bats, giving up zero runs on zero hits combined in two innings of work.

But, the Bats simply could not muster any offense.

Zink (4-4, 3.73) got the win for Pawtucket going seven-and-a-third scoreless innings, while giving up only one hit, walking six and striking out two.

The Bats (21-25) finish up the home stand Thursday night at 7:05 pm. at Louisville Slugger Field as they host Pawtucket (25-20) for their final meeting of the season. Probable starters are RHP Homer Bailey (3-5, 4.57) for the Bats and RHP Michael Bowden (2-2, 1.64) for the Red Sox.
