Carolina Mudcats News Release
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Carolina and Chattanooga went back-and-forth throughout Monday afternoon's match-up at AT&T Field. Juan Francisco, however, proved to be too much to handle for the Lookouts, as the Mudcats third baseman hit two homers to lead his team to a 4-3 win over the Lookouts.
The Lookouts struck first in the third frame with two runs. Justin Sellers began the inning by reaching base on a hit by pitch and advanced to second on a James Adkins sacrifice bunt. James Tomlin followed with an RBI double to right for the first run of the game. Tony Abreu then hit a single to left, advancing Tomlin to third. Andrew Lambo subsequently grounded out to first baseman Jason Louwsma, who threw to second to start a double play, but shortstop Zach Cozart was unable to position himself for a throw to first. As a result, Tomlin scored on the play, giving the Lookouts a 2-0 edge.
Juan Francisco led off the fourth for the Mudcats with a solo blast to halve the Lookouts' lead, 2-1.
Francisco, who enjoyed a rather fruitful series against Chattanooga, struck again the sixth with a two-run homer to right, giving the Mudcats a 3-2 lead.
The see-saw battle continued, as Chattanooga evened-up the score in the seventh. Eddy Perez greeted relief pitcher Ruben Medina with a triple to right. Russ Mitchell minimized the suspense by ripping a single up the middle to tie the score. Despite a two-out single by Mike Rose, which put runners on the corners, the Lookouts would fail to take advantage of the situation, as Tomlin proceeded to strike out to end the inning.
Once again, the Mudcats countered with a run of their own in a very efficient manner: a leadoff Zach Cozart solo shot over the left field wall.
Derrik Lutz closed the door on the Lookouts, despite yielding a hit and a walk, in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
Ruben Medina (1-2) was credited with the win for the Mudcats. In two innings of relief, he surrendered one run on four hits.
Tim Corcoran (1-4) took the loss for the Lookouts. He threw two innings in relief, giving up one run on three hits and a walk.
Tomorrow, Lookouts will hit the road to play a five-game series against the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx. The Lookouts will return to Chattanooga on May 31st to start a five-game homestand against the Mobile BayBears. Tickets for this game or any other Lookouts home game can be purchased at the Lookouts Box Office at AT&T Field, online at www.lookouts.com, or by calling (423) 267-4849.
