Cougars Rally Again, Best Whitecaps 6-4

GENEVA, IL - Steve Kleen drilled a three-run home run over the left field wall in the seventh inning as the Kane County Cougars took the lead and the game, 6-4, over the West Michigan Whitecaps. Kane County wins the series two games to one. With the loss, the Whitecaps fall to second place in the Midwest league's eastern division.

A four-run second propelled the 'Caps to a 4-0 lead. Billy Nowlin led off with a double, and he scored on Jordan Lennerton's RBI single. Joe Bowen and Luis Palacios followed with singles. Then Gustavo Nunez laced a double down the left field line to score both Lennerton and Bowen. Ben Guez then drilled a deep sacrifice fly to plate Palacios for the fourth run.

Kane County put two runs on the board in the bottom of the third. An RBI triple by Jason Christian, and an RBI groundout from Matt Ray made the score 4-2.

In the sixth, the Cougars crept within a run when Grant Desme led off with a single and Franklin Hernandez followed with a double. Jeremy Barfield's RBI groundout made the Whitecaps' lead, 4-3.

Kane County made their move in the seventh on the home run to left by Kleen. Jason Christian and Dusty Coleman scored, and it was 6-4 Cougars.

The Whitecaps could not mount a threat in either the eighth or ninth innings.

Luke Putkonen started for the Whitecaps and did not get a decision. The right hander worked five innings, giving up 5 hits, 2 runs, with 4 strikeouts.

Trey Barham picks up the win for the Cougars. Jared Gayhart is tagged with his second loss.

Gustavo Nunez had a double with two RBI. Jason Christian had two hits as did Grant Desme.

The Whitecaps return to Fifth Third Ballpark for a ten game home stand beginning Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. against the Quad Cities River Bandits.
