Biscuits Take Series Finale over Suns

Jacksonville, Fla. - Fernando Cortez and Brandon Chaves both hit their first homeruns of the year, while starter Jason Cromer dealt seven strong innings leading the Montgomery Biscuits (23-22) to a 6-5 victory over the Jacksonville Suns (23-22) in front of 5,387 Monday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Cromer (4-2) allowed one run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts over seven innings for the win. Jacksonville defeated Cromer in a start on April 29 at Riverwalk Stadium.

Suns starter Aaron Thompson (2-6) gave up three runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts in the loss.

Calvin Medlock (12) saved the game, but allowed a three-run homerun before shutting down the ninth inning rally.

Montgomery opened the scoring in the third inning as Fernando Cortez belted his first homerun of the season, a three-run homerun for a 3-0 lead.

Jacksonville answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Bryan Petersen for a 3-1 score.

The Biscuits added two more runs in the seventh inning on a two-run homerun from Brandon Chaves, his first of the season, opening a 5-1 lead.

The teams traded runs in the eighth inning. In the top, Cortez scored on a passed ball for a 6-1 score, before Jacksonville's Lorenzo Scott singled in a run in the bottom of the inning to cut the Montgomery lead to 6-2.

In the ninth inning Jacksonville's Kevin Randel belted a pinch three-run homerun, cutting the deficit to 6-5 before Medlock finished the game on a strikeout.
