Goodbye Philadelphia: HERSHEY not only completed a four-game sweep of Philadelphia in the 2009 East Division Semi- Finals Saturday night, the BEARS also ended the club's 13- year run at the corner of Broad Street and Pattison Avenue. The Phantoms, who were sold at midseason, are off to Glens Falls, New York next season.
Goaltending and special teams: The BEARS won the goaltending and special teams battle in a landslide in the East Division Semi-Finals. HERSHEY held Philadelphia without a single power play goal in 22 chances while scoring seven power play goals against the Phantoms. Goaltender Michal Neuvirth, who earned his first Calder Cup playoff shutout in Game 4, won all four games in the series and posted a 1.50 goals against average and a 94.5 saves percentage.
Spreading it around: 11 different players picked up at least one goal for HERSHEY in the East Division Semi-Finals against Philadelphia. Alexandre Giroux, Mathieu Perreault and Staffan Kronwall led the team in goals in the first round with two goals apiece.
Elsewhere in the Conference: The Worcester Sharks posted perhaps the biggest upset of the Calder Cup playoffs thus far, upending the Atlantic Division's top seed in the Hartford Wolf Pack. The Sharks, who defeated the Wolf Pack in six games, take on the Providence Bruins in the 2009 Atlantic Division Finals. The winner of the Worcester/Providence series will face the winner of the 2009 East Division Finals in the next round.
Washington update: The Capitals forced a Game 7 in its Eastern Conference first round series with the New York Rangers after a 5-3 win Sunday at Madison Square Garden. Game 7 will be Tuesday night at Verizon Center.
