Vancouver Giants News Release
VANCOUVER BC - Blake Gal scored at 6:05 of the fourth overtime as the Spokane Chiefs edged the Vancouver Giants 3-2 in the second longest game in WHL history.
Gal would skate in on a partial breakaway, only to be neatly checked by Mike Berube. Unfortunately for the Giants defender, Giants goalie Tyson Sexsmith had moved with Gal to square up for his shot and the puck helplessly slid from Berube's great defensive play into the back of the Giants net.
Evander Kane and Brent Regner would score goals for Vancouver while Tyler Johnson and Drayson Bowman would add markers for the Chiefs. The story was the goaltending, as Tyson Sexmsith and Chiefs goalie Dustin Tokarski put on a battle between the pipes. Vancouver would outshoot Spokane 62-57 on the night, but as fate would have it, the game would end on a sour note for the Giants.
At 126 minutes and five seconds, this game ranks as the second longest in WHL History. Only the game between the Kamloops Blazers and Kottenay Ice back on March 25, 2003 would last longer. On that night, the Ice would outlast the Blazers 3-2 in a game that lasted 136 minutes and 56 seconds. The Giants have now been involved in two of the four longest games in WHL History. Vancouver and Chilliwack went 119 minutes and seven seconds in the 2008 playoffs before Craig Cunningham lifted the Giants to the victory.
Vancouver now trials this best of seven WHL West Semi Final Series 3-2 as they head back to Spokane for Game Six on Sunday night. The Giants will need to win on Sunday or they will be eliminated from the 2009 WHL playoffs.
