Milwaukee Wave News Release

MILWAUKEE (Jan. 28, 2009) - Chellsie Memmel, the West Allis native who won the all-around gold medal at the 2005 World Gymnastics Championships, visits the Milwaukee Wave on Sunday, March 15 for the team's second Parade of Champions of the season.

Prior to the Wave's 2 p.m. kickoff against Detroit, winning teams from any sport are invited to parade on to the U.S. Cellular Arena field and receive a medal from Memmel. Earlier this year, the 20-year-old helped the U.S. women win the team silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games, where she only competed on the uneven bars due to an injured ankle.

"We're extremely excited to welcome Chellsie Memmel to our Parade of Champions event," said Matt Schroeder, vice president of communications for the Milwaukee Wave. "She's a worldwide star who has never forgotten her roots, and the young champions who will meet her on March 15 will certainly find her an inspiration."

Memmel has won six career world medals, including three gold and three silver. At the 2005 World Championships, Memmel became the first U.S. woman to win the all-around gold medal since Shannon Miller in 1994, as well as claimed silver on the uneven bars and balance beam.

Memmel burst into the spotlight at the 2003 Pan American Games, where she won five medals, including team and all-around gold. An alternate on the 2003 World Championships Team, she was cast into the lineup after injuries and illness of three team members. Memmel helped the USA win its first-ever team world gold medal, earning the highest all-around marks of any U.S. gymnast during team finals. She also tied with teammate Hollie Vise for the gold medal on the uneven bars. For her outstanding 2003 season, Memmel was named the 2003 TOPs Co-Athlete of the Year with Carly Patterson.

Members of all championship teams receive a $3 ticket to the March 15 game, and friends and family can purchase tickets for $12 each. Call Kilee Westrick at 414-908-6353 or the Wave general office at 414-224-9283 to reserve a spot in the Parade of Champions.
