Fresno Grizzlies News Release

FRESNO, CA - Lincoln Elementary School in Fresno will host the kickoff event for the Fresno Grizzlies award-winning educational program "Wild About Reading" on Thursday, January 8th at 11:00am. The Grizzlies Community Fund's developmental reading program for children throughout the Valley was recently honored with the Fresno Compact Business Partner Award.

"Wild About Reading", now in its sixth year of existence, utilizes baseball to promote reading in the classroom. Each student at participating schools that reads ten books in five weeks earns two free tickets to a 2009 Grizzlies game at Chukchansi Park. Each participating school hosts a kickoff assembly featuring the Grizzlies beloved mascot, Parker.

The 2009 "Wild About Reading" program will open at Lincoln Elementary School in Fresno on Thursday at 11:00am. Lincoln Elementary has helped the Grizzlies kick off the "Wild About Reading" program for three consecutive years. Over the next three months leading up to Opening Day, Parker and the Grizzlies staff will reach out to more than 55,000 students in Fresno, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, and Tulare counties.

"'Wild About Reading' is the Grizzlies Community Fund's longest running and most far-reaching community program," said Executive Vice President Andrew Stuebner. "We're also proud to say that it is one of the largest educational initiatives in all of Minor League Baseball."

Prior to the holidays, "Wild About Reading" was honored with the Fresno Compact Business Partner Award. With the strong nexus between quality education and school business partnerships in mind, the Fresno Compact annually acknowledges ten businesses that have contributed not only financial resources, but also staff to support schools in Fresno County.

The Fresno Grizzlies open the 2009 season at Chukchansi Park on Thursday, April 9th when they welcome the Portland Beavers to downtown Fresno.
