Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, NE - The Omaha Royals have been voted by readers of Omaha Magazine as Best Omaha Sports Team. The magazine's 17th annual Best of Omaha Awards, a reader-determined list of the best businesses and services offered throughout the city, is printed in its special, 128-page January/February 2009 edition.
More than 12,000 voters - a record number - participated in this year's balloting, which was conducted online at www.voteomaha.com between July 1 and September 30, 2008. Best Omaha Sports Team was one of 138 categories, with the top three vote-getters in each category listed in Omaha Magazine's current issue. The Royals were followed in their category by the Creighton Bluejays in second place and the Omaha Beef in third.
"We are humbled that in a field that included great teams such as Creighton University athletics, the Omaha Lancers and the Omaha Beef, we were selected as the Best Sports Team in Omaha," said Martie Cordaro, Royals Vice President/General Manager. "Our staff continues to think out-of-the-box and do things differently from past years here with the Royals and the results are beginning to show."
Last season, 349,376 fans attended Omaha Royals home games, marking the team's largest season attendance since 2001 and making the Royals the largest drawing sports team or event in the metro area for 2008. The average crowd of 5,375 per game last season was the club's highest figure since 2000. Omaha's Triple-A franchise has drawn over 300,000 fans a year to Rosenblatt for 21 consecutive seasons, dating back to 1988.
The Royals 2009 home opener at Rosenblatt Stadium is slated for Friday, April 17th at 7:05 p.m. vs. the Albuquerque Isotopes.
