Rapid City Rush News Release
(Rapid City, SD) - The Tulsa Oilers and Rapid City Rush met in the second game of their doubleheader on Saturday. On Friday night, the Rush handed the Oilers their fifth consecutive loss, coming out on top, 4-2. Unfortunately, Saturday was not a repeat of Friday night's events as the Oilers got the win with a score of 3-2.
The first period saw a lot of high octane offense from both teams, but Tulsa found the back of the net first at only 1:54 in the period. The Tulsa goal was scored by Bobby Reed who was assisted by goaltender Kevin St. Pierre. Rapid City took only four minutes to respond to the Oiler goal with Blaine Jarvis finding the back of the net at 5:33 in the period for his second of the season assisted by Kyle Sheen. Both goaltenders saw many pucks during the period, but Jon Pelle was able to sneak one past St. Pierre at the 15:04 mark in the period. Jamie VanderVeeken and Rich Hansen provided the assists for the powerplay goal. Thirty seconds later, Oiler right winger, Jeff Christian, got the puck past Rush goalie Lanny Ramage for the equalizer. The Rush won the battle in the shot column firing 12 at St. Pierre as the Oilers got ten off against Rush goaltender Lanny Ramage. The end of the first found the two teams tied at 2 apiece.
Both teams had a strong defensive showing in the second period. St. Pierre stopped 7 Rush shots, and Ramage didn't let any of the 12 Oiler shots in his net. The period also only saw two penalties, with the Rush accounting for both of those. Tulsa and Rapid City ended the period with neither team adding to their two points already on the board.
The third period looked like a continuation of the second for nearly the first nine minutes, until Brendon Hodge was able to get a puck past Ramage on the powerplay at the 11:51 mark in the period. Hodge was assisted by Mike Mullen and Jeff Christian, who had picked up an earlier goal for the Oilers. The Rush ended the night edging out the Oilers in shots, 38-35, but couldn't find the back of the net in the third, leaving Tulsa with the win, 3-2.
Rapid City ended the game with one powerplay goal on two chances, while the Oilers went 1- for-4 on the man advantage. Tulsa snapped their winless streak at 5 games while the Rush are still looking for their first winning streak of the season.
Rapid City will now travel to Broomfield, Colorado to take on division rivals, the Rocky Mountain Rage, Sunday, January 4th , at 3:05 p.m.
