Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Waterloo Black Hawks and Des Moines Buccaneers played the highest-scoring game in the USHL this season, and the Hawks ended up on top 8-6 Friday at Buccaneer Arena.

The Buccaneers held an edge throughout much of the early action. Matt White scored 3:39 into the game, but Ben Miller rallied the Hawks with a goal less than two minutes later. The first period turned on a two-minute five-on-three power play for the Bucs. Nick Pryor blasted in a shot at 12:56, then Brett Bruneteau banked a shot in off of a Black Hawk defenseman nine seconds later.

The Hawks recovered momentum at 18:45 on Tyler Barnes' redirection. Barnes almost scored again in the final minute, but at intermission, Des Moines was still up 3-2.

Waterloo went back to work when Derek Arnold scored from behind the net at 6:33 of the second. Jordan Samuels-Thomas set the Hawks in front on a power play at 8:36. However, the Buccaneers' third power play goal, off the stick of J.P. Burkemper at 17:54, sent the game into a 4-4 tie after 40 minutes.

Des Moines struck on a power play again less than a minute into the third, with Ryan Walters doing the damage. The Hawks tied it at 3:35 when Miller redirected Scott Pavelski's flip toward the net.

Again, Des Moines used the power play to take the lead on another Pryor rocket at 10:05. Tyler Barnes retied the game 42 seconds later. The Hawks went shorthanded again at 11:54 but were able to kill of Des Moines' tenth power play. Eriah Hayes found Miller coming out of the penalty box and set up the go-ahead breakaway goal and hat trick. Arnold added his second goal of the game at 18:54 to seal the win.

The Black Hawks hope to have something left for Saturday's home game against the Fargo Force. Waterloo will wear special, patriotic uniforms for Military Appreciation Night, sponsored by Tyson Fresh Meats. The jerseys will be auctioned off after the game with proceeds benefiting local military- and veteran-related charities.
