Mississippi RiverKings News Release
(Southaven, MS) - The Mississippi RiverKings of the Central Hockey League (CHL) have announced that goaltender Ross Cherry has been waived and they have added goaltender Tyler Sims to their roster. RiverKings' Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin Kaminski announced the changes as he continues to finalize his regular season roster prior to the team's first game of the season, this Friday night, October 17th, against the Wichita Thunder at the DeSoto Civic Center.
Sims made a brief appearance in the ECHL last season after completing a four-year career at Providence College. He played two games with the Reading Royals, posting a 0-1-1 record, a .907 save percentage, and a goals-against-average of 3.00. Tyler also played in the ECHL last season with the Las Vegas Wranglers, where he recorded a 1-1-0 record, a save percentage of .860, and a goals-against-average of 4.06.
While at Providence, a member of the NCAA Division One Hockey East Conference, Sims last year played in 32 games for the Friars, posting a 13-15-4 record. Tyler finished with a save percentage of .907, and a goals-against-average of 2.53. Tyler had three shutouts and logged over 1828 minutes of playing time.
In his career as a Friar, Sims played in 116 games, posting a 44-56-10 record with seven shutouts, which is a school career record. His save percentage with the Friars was .909 and his goals-against-average was 2.57. Among his honors, Sims was a three-time league all-academic selection, and received several league weekly, monthly, and season notices as a defensive player.
Sims has some hockey bloodlines in his immediate family, as he is the son of former San Jose Sharks head coach Al Sims, who played ten seasons in the National Hockey League. Al also was an assistant coach under current Providence head coach Tim Army while with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim of the NHL.
Kaminski says, "Tyler had a very good college career at Providence and from all the homework I've done and the coaches I've talked to, he is supposed to be legit. He's looked very solid and very quick and agile, so we look forward to Tyler to come in here and make a statement and push (Kevin) Beech to be the number one guy."
Cherry was picked up by the Huntsville Havoc of the Southern Professional Hockey League. He played in one pre-season game with the RiverKings, earning a 3-1 victory over Bossier-Shreveport on Friday, October 10th at the DeSoto Civic Center. Ross made 21 saves on 22 shots on goal in the contest.
Opening night for the Mississippi RiverKings is Friday, October 17th at the DeSoto Civic Center against the Wichita Thunder, presented by Cellular South. Season tickets for the excitement of RiverKings hockey are still available; just call the team offices at 662-342-1755 for more information today!
