CHL on-ice officials introduced

Published on October 15, 2008 under Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release

The Central Hockey League (CHL) announced today the gentlemen that will serve as the league's full-time on-ice officials for the 2008-09 season. Of the 15 full-time referees and linesmen, four are new to the CHL this season.

The new faces are referees Kevin Graber, Tom Steinel and Jean Philippe Sylvain and linesman Benjamin Dupuis.

"We have had great success in advancing officials to the higher levels and I am as happy as I have been with the roster we have," said Wayne Bonney, CHL's Supervisor of Officials. "The new officials, combined with our already prominent group, have the potential to skate very soon in the American Hockey League and maybe one day make it to the NHL."

The CHL has had two referees in recent years make it to the NHL, Gord Dwyer and Frederick L'Ecuyer. This past summer, Mark Lemelin, Jordan Crowell, Ian Croft and Zac Wiebe all participated in NHL rookie games and Croft has been signed to officiate American Hockey League games this season.

Rule Changes

The CHL heads into its 17th season on Friday night with seven games on the schedule. The new season features several rule changes including:

Overtime Penalties - Minor penalties called in overtime will result in one minute in the penalty box compared to two minutes in regulation and a double minor called in overtime will be two minutes as opposed to four minutes.

Puck Out of Bounds - Any puck that goes out of play off the goal frame, including the goal post or crossbar, will result in the face-off remaining in the attacking team's offensive zone. In previous years, the face-off would be outside the offensive zone unless the puck hit a defensive player prior to hitting the goal frame and deflecting out of play.
