Chicago Sky Re-Signs Veterans Dominique Canty And Brooke Wyckoff

CHICAGO, OCTOBER 9, 2008 -Chicago Sky Head Coach and General Manager Steven Key announced today that the team has re-signed guard Dominique Canty and forward Brooke Wyckoff through the 2009 season. Per team policy, terms of the contracts have not been released.

Canty, a 10-year veteran of the WNBA, was selected 29th overall by the Detroit Shock in the 1999 WNBA Draft. In 2008, Canty averaged 8.1 points, 4.1 assists, and 2.5 rebounds per game. Ranked ninth in the league in assists, Canty missed six regular season games due to a knee injury. Canty ranked sixth in the WNBA in assists-per turnover. On July 2 against the Indiana Fever, Canty tied her season best with 16 points, two assists and six rebounds.

"Canty brings that veteran leadership to the team," Key said. "Although she is known for being a quite leader, she is very much respected by the coaches, staff and fans for her abilities on the court. With Nique we have consistency, we know what to expect from her and we can count on the fact that she gives us her all during practice and during games."

Wyckoff, a seven-year veteran of the league, was selected 26th overall by the Orlando Miracle in 2001. The 6-1 forward spent the previous three-seasons with the Sky, after being selected by Chicago in the 2004 WNBA Expansion Draft. In 2008 she averaged 2.2 points, 1.4 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game. Wyckoff played in all 34 games in the 2008 season, starting 23 times.

"Brooke's the person you want to have on your team," said Coach Key said. "She comes to work hard every day, whether you've lost a game or won, whether she's played two minutes or thirty minutes. That's the kind of teammate you want to have and the kind of person you want to work with on a daily basis. She's a great role model for the younger players on the team."

"I'm excited because they're both veteran players, and with that kind of experience, it's exactly what we need," said Key. "It's not just experience playing basketball, its experience playing with us, and that's the key element that we haven't really had but need as we continue to develop as a team."

The Sky is one of seven independently-owned teams in the WNBA, the world's longest-running women's professional sports league. Chicago finished fifth in the Eastern Division with a 12-22 record in their third season. Sylvia Fowles, Chicago's rookie center, ranked third in blocks per game and fifth in double-doubles with six. Forward Candice Dupree ranked third in defensive rebounds, fourth in rebounds per game and third in double-doubles with nine. Guard Jia Perkins ranked fourth in the league in steals, fifth in the league in free-throw percentage and seventh in points. The Sky plays at the Chicago's UIC Pavilion.
