Sporting Kansas City News Release
Both new acquisitions will be available for selection Sunday as the Kansas City Wizards (6-8-8, 26 pts) travel to face Houston Dynamo (9-5-8, 35 pts) Sunday. The game will be broadcast live nationally in Spanish on MLS television partner TelaFutura at 2 p.m. CT. Metro Sports will also carry the game live locally in English. Kansas City and Houston tied their first match-up of the season back in April and squared off in last season's Western Conference Championship Game, one game short of MLS Cup. Houston went on to win its second-consecutive MLS Cup Championship.
Kansas City had a busy week of player moves, bringing in forwards Herculez Gomez and Abe Thompson from the Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas, respectively. Gomez brings 22 career MLS goals and eight career assists to the table, while Thompson checks in with 14 career strikes and 11 career assists. The Wizards sent two draft selections and allocation money to the Rapids for Gomez and shipped allocation money to Dallas for Thompson. Each player trained Friday and will be available to Wizards Head Coach Curt Onalfo should he deem them ready. See Technical Director Peter Vermes' thoughts on each player:
"Herculez Gomez is a talented, hardworking and passionate player who is capable of scoring quality goals," Technical Director Peter Vermes said. "He has the ability to play at forward or in midfield and help bolster our attack. Gomez is a young player who already has a lot of experience and will help us both this season and in the future."
"Abe Thompson is a big, strong target forward who makes great runs off the ball and always puts himself in dangerous spots," Technical Director Peter Vermes said. "He is a good finisher with both feet and his head and we are excited for him to come to Kansas City. We feel good about our last two moves."
Watch parties will be held in Kansas City at Barley's Brewhaus in Shawnee and O'Dowd's Little Dublin at Zona Rosa in the Northland. Kansas City's next home match comes Saturday, September 13 against the Los Angeles Galaxy. The match will be played at Arrowhead Stadium at 4 p.m. CT and broadcast nationwide on HDNet. International superstar David Beckham is scheduled to make his first-ever appearance in Kansas City.
