Alvarez, Bolton - American Association Players of the Week

DURHAM, NC - Pensacola Pelicans OF Rafael Alvarez and St. Paul Saints RHP Dustin Bolton have been named by PA-Sportsticker, the official statistician of the American Association, as the Teamline Direct Batter and Pitcher of the Week.
Alvarez batted .476 in seven games for the Pelicans. He clubbed three home runs to go along with six RBI, five runs scored and two stolen bases. Alvarez also had 10 hits with an on-base percentage of .621 and a slugging percentage of .905. The 31-year-old is hitting .305 on the year with 12 home runs, 34 RBI, 53 hits and 14 doubles. He is second in the league in slugging percentage (.592), third in home runs and fifth in on-base percentage (.425).
The Venezuelan native was signed as a nondrafted free agent by the Minnesota Twins in 1994. Alvarez played seven seasons in the Twins farm system. He has played in the Mexican League with Cancun, Laguna and Veracruz as well as with independent clubs including Allentown, Fargo-Moorhead, Elmira and Anderson. Alvarez also spent 2006 with Altoona, Double A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Bolton pitched a complete game shutout in the 3-0 win over the Shreveport Sports on July 9. He allowed only three hits and one walk to the Sports while striking out three. The Kansas City, MO resident is 4-2 on the season with an earned run average of 2.58 in 59 1/3 innings pitched. He has struck out 30 batters while walking only 15 and has an opponents' batting average of .245.
The 26-year-old Bolton is currently in his fourth season of professional baseball, all in the independent leagues. He has pitched with Evansville and River City of the Frontier League, Kansas City of the Northern League and St. Joe of the American Association.
