Norfolk Tides News Release
July 3, 2008 - Norfolk rallied from an early 6-0 deficit with five unanswered runs, but couldn't push the tying run across in a 6-5 setback to the Richmond Braves in front of 11,403 fans Thursday night at Harbor Park.
After falling behind 6-0 in the fourth frame, the Tides began their comeback bid in the sixth inning, as Oscar Salazar and Luis Terrero each drove home a run with RBI singles off Richmond starter Brian Lawrence (1-2).
The Tides cut the lead in half in the eighth inning, thanks to two-out run-scoring singles by Jeff Fiorentino and Chris Heintz. Norfolk nearly pulled to within a run in the frame, but Mike Costanzo was thrown out at home plate on Heintz' single by right fielder Jason Perry to end the inning with the Tides trailing 6-4.
The Tides once again mounted a threat in the ninth, as Luis Hernandez led off the inning with a double off Braves reliever Jorge Julio. After a groundout moved Hernandez to third, Eider Torres drew a walk to put runners at the corners, and Scott Moore followed with a run-scoring groundout that moved Torres to second. After a wild pitch, Salazar worked a walk to chase Julio from the contest and put runners on first and third, but Jonathon Rouwenhorst retired Costanzo on a fly ball to left to end the threat and earn his first save of the season.
Craig Anderson (1-7) took the loss for Norfolk, allowing six runs - three earned - on nine hits in four innings of work. The Tides' bullpen of Rocky Cherry and Esteban Yan had a tremendous night, as the duo combined to toss five shutout innings of relief.
The run-scoring single by Salazar in the 6th inning extended his hitting streak with Norfolk to 14 games.
The crowd of 11,403 was a season-high.
The Tides take to the road on Friday for the start of a six-game swing, as they continue their five-game, home-and-home series with the R-Braves. Randy Keisler (0-1, 5.68) will take the hill for the Tides against Richmond righty Chris Resop (2-0, 2.08), with first pitch slated for 6:00.
