Thon Takes One For Joliet

JOLIET, IL-In a game that featured three ties and plenty of offense, Joliet 1B Freddie Thon (2-5) hit two home runs, including a two-run home run in the sixth inning to snap a 7-7 tie and give the JackHammers a 9-7 win over the Kansas City T-Bones before 3,337 fans at Silver Cross Field on Sunday night. The JackHammers finish their six-game home stand with a 3-3 record and take to the road to start a three-game series in Schaumburg on Tuesday.

The T-Bones scored two runs in the first inning on a two-run home run by Jim Fasano (2-5). Geoff McCallum (2-5) led off the game by hitting a single against Joliet starting pitcher Carlos Castillo. After Rob Watson (2-4) walked and was erased as part of a double play hit into by Brad Correll (2-5), Fasano hit a two-run home run over the right field wall for 2-0 Kansas City lead.

The JackHammers scored a single run in the second inning on a solo home run by Thon, who smacked a pitch from Kansas City starter Kenny Durost (2-2) over the right field wall to cut the T-Bones lead down to 2-1.

Doc Brooks (2-4) hit an RBI double to score McIntyre in the third inning. The JackHammers tied the game at 2-2.

Kansas City scored a single run in the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead. John Martin (1-4) had an RBI double to score Aharon Eggleston (1-4).

The JackHammers responded with four runs in the fourth inning of play. Joey Gomes (2-3) led off the inning with a solo home run. It was the fifth home run of 2008 for Gomes and tied the game at 3-3. Wally Backman, Jr. (0-4) reached first base on an error by T-Bones centerfielder Aharon Eggleston. Dorian Rojas (1-3) hit an RBI double to score Backman, Jr and Joe Hooft (2-4) reached base with a two-bagger to score Rojas. Nick McIntyre (2-5) doubled to round out the scoring in the inning and give the JackHammers a 6-3 lead.

The T-Bones scored three runs in the fifth inning on back-to-back home runs by Correll and Fasano. The game was tied at 6-6 before Joliet came to the plate in the fifth inning.

The JackHammers scored a run in the fifth inning on a bases-loaded walk by Mike Caruso (0-2). The Joliet leadoff man "drove in" the run for a 7-6 Joliet lead.

Back-to-back doubles by McCallum and Watson tied the game at 7-7 in the sixth inning before Joliet had the game-winning hit in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Brooks led off the inning with a walk and Cory Harris flew out. Thon smacked a two-run home run to give the JackHammers a 9-7 lead.

Castillo pitched five innings and allowed six runs on nine hits. Chad Fillinger (2-0) worked two innings and allowed one run on three hits to pick up the victory. Tyler Meigs worked two scoreless innings to pick up his third save of the season.

After a day off on Monday, the JackHammers travel to Schaumburg to start a three-game series on Tuesday night. Aaron Trolia (5-2, 4.22) gets the start for the JackHammers against Steve Shippey (2-4, 7.65) for the Flyers.
